Hynix may face stiff import duties

Monday, March 31, 2003 The U.S. Department of Commerce may impose the punitive import duties on Hynix Semiconductor, a possible ruling over the allegations by Micron Technology that it was materially injured by imports from South Korean chipmakers that received illegal state aid.

A representative for the U.S. Commerce Department said the ruling would be made public on the agency's Web site on Tuesday.

The proposed duties could be crippling to Hynix, which posted huge consecutive losses in the past three years, analysts said.

The European Union is expected to take similar preliminary steps on April 24 after sources said last week it might impose up to 35 percent duties on shipments of Hynix chips after Germany's Infineon Technologies filed a complaint in June.

Hynix might have to seek other ways to minimize the impact by channeling chips more on the Asian spot market and boosting productions at its overseas plant to avoid tariffs, analysts said.

Analysts said they did not expect punitive tariffs to be imposed on Samsung because the company had not received any subsidies from the government.
