Micron Technology Inc. has inaugurated its semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a significant step in expanding India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. The site converts advanced DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products for customers worldwide.
The first phase of the Sanand operation will include more than 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space once fully ramped, making it one of the world’s largest single-floor assembly and test cleanrooms. The facility has begun commercial production and is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
The project represents a combined investment of approximately $2.75 billion by Micron and its government partners. The opening ceremony was attended by Micron Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
Here are some of the latest developments in the power electronics sector that are aimed at helping the industry achieve sustainability.
Micron presented its first shipment of made-in-India memory modules to Dell Technologies for laptops manufactured in India for the domestic market. The company expects to assemble and test tens of millions of chips at the Sanand facility in 2026, increasing to hundreds of millions in 2027.
According to Micron, the expansion of conventional assembly and test operations in India complements its planned development of advanced manufacturing and packaging capabilities in the United States, strengthening its global network.
Government officials described the facility as a milestone for India’s semiconductor ambitions, positioning the country to expand from a chip consumer to a manufacturing and innovation hub.
Micron is also supporting workforce development through partnerships with Pandit Deendayal Energy University and other institutions, focusing on STEM education and advanced manufacturing skills.
The Sanand facility was built in line with Micron’s sustainability and safety standards. It is designed to meet or exceed LEED Gold requirements and incorporates advanced water-saving technologies to enable zero liquid discharge.
