Calterah SoCs use UWB radar for automotive, consumer uses

Monday, July 14, 2025

Calterah believes that the Dubhe UWB SoC series is the first to comply to IEEE 802.15.4ab (PHY/MAC) and IEE 802.154z (PHY/MAC). The 2T4R and 1T3R SoCs are CAL1106 and CAL1104 respectively.

Junming Xiao, head of Calterah‘s UWB product line, explained that they support five, six, eight or nine RF channels ans support time of flight (ToF), PDoA and TDoA (phase difference of arrival and time difference of arrival) modes.

In addition to a 240MHz RISC-V processor, 264kB RAM and 1MB flash memory, the SoC integrates CAN-FD/UART/LIN peripherals and uses BLE-assisted multi-millisecond mode of IEE 802.154z to extend the detection range beyond 400m.

The IEEE 802.15.4ab standard’s achieves up to 20dB signal gain, to optimise signal penetration. Field tests have shown the SoC’s signals under BLE-assisted multi-millisecond mode can penetrate five cars in an underground car park, delivering stable non-line of sight (NLoS) positioning for digital keys.

Named after one of the stars in the Ursa Major constellation, the SoCs can be used for a variety of automotive applications, including digital keys, in-cabin UWB child presence detection (CPD) and exterior UWB radar systems.

The CAL1106-AQ’s radar capability enables functions such as kick sensing, in-cabin presence detection and intrusion detection, using a single hardware device, which lowers system costs, added the company.

The SoCs are built using a 22nm CMOS process and are delivered in a wettable QFN40 6.0mm x 6.0mm package.

Consumer grade devices, the CAL110x-CW, are also available from Calterah. They are in a compact 3.0mm x 3.0mm package and are designed for remote control, access systems, indorr positioing and navigateion, presence detection, robot communication and contactless gate access.

The Dubhe SoCs are sampling now with production part approval process expected in Q4.
