Hyundai moves up Georgia EV factory timeline

Friday, March 1, 2024

Hyundai Motor Group is ramping up the timeline to open its $5.5 billion electric vehicle manufacturing campus, with plans to begin production in Q4 of this year, the South Korea-based automaker announced on Monday. Production was initially slated to begin in Q1 of 2025.

“This is the largest economic development project in Georgia’s history, and we have been moving at a rapid speed,” Oscar Kwon, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, said in a statement. “Completing a project of this scale on this timeline has been a challenge, but our team has delivered amazing results.”

Once the facility begins production, it will produce up to 300,000 Hyundai, Genesis and Kia EVs annually, according to an announcement from the Georgia governor’s office.

Additionally, Hyundai and subsidiary Genesis’ EVs, including the Ioniq 5 and 6, GV60 and GV70, as well as the hydrogen-powered Xcient Fuel Cell Truck, will be used for logistics needs between the automaker’s manufacturing facilities and its suppliers, according to the Hyundai press release.

The automaker’s upcoming EV manufacturing site and nearby battery factory with LG Energy Solution have drawn more than 17 suppliers and at least $2.5 billion in investment to Georgia. The growing manufacturing network is also creating over 6,700 jobs, according to the state.
