Samsung is in mass production of 12GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM

Friday, March 15, 2019

Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of the industry's highest-capacity DRAM chips for smartphones, the chip maker said Thursday.

The company said it came up with the new mobile DRAM chip with a capacity of 12 gigabytes to meet growing demands from phone makers.

"With more smartphones adopting more features, Samsung has seen increasing demand for higher-capacity DRAM chips from phone makers," the firm said.

Phone makers have tried to feature enhanced features for their premium smartphones such as more than five cameras on a single smartphone, wider display size, artificial intelligence (AI) technology and even fifth-generation (5G) network service.

The firm added the new DRAM chip is especially suitable for foldable smartphones that have a wider screen.

Samsung said the 12-gigabyte mobile DRAM can accommodate such demand. The firm combined six 2-gigabyte LPDDR4X chips into one single package so the new product can help phone makers have more space for larger batteries.

With the mass production of the 12-gigabyte DRAM, Samsung is now providing a wide range of mobile DRAM chips from 12-gigabyte mobile DRAM chips to 512-gigabyte embedded Union Flash Storage 3.0 (eUFS 3.0) chips, the firm said.

Samsung recently announced it also has started mass production of the industry's first 512-gigabyte eUFS 3.0 chip, which will be used mainly for premium smartphones.

"With the LPDDR4X, we're strengthening our position as the premium mobile memory maker best positioned to accommodate rapidly growing demand from global smartphone manufacturers," said Chun Se-won, executive vice president of memory marketing at Samsung.

Since the firm introduced 1-gigabyte mobile DRAM chips in 2011, Samsung has continued to release updated versions.

In addition to mass production of 12-gigabyte chips, the firm said it plans to more than triple its production of high capacity DRAM chips such as 8-gigabyte ones in its memory chip production line in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
